By Juan Manuel Díaz C. for the Panama America - The Public Ministry issued an order to be investigated against Second Anti-Corruption Prosecutor Maribel Cornejo after she was accused by the President of the Supreme Court, Graciela Dixon, of abusing her office. The Public Ministry formalized the charges and informed Prosecutor Cornejo of the complaint against her. Panama's Attorney General Ana Matilde Gomez said that with regards to the request to have Cornejo removed from her position, that decision corresponds to the Criminal Room of the Supreme Court to decide, and indicated that an administrative file has been opened against Cornejo.
Editor's Comment: Panama's Attorney General, Ana Matilde Gomez, responded to the criminal complaint filed by the President of the Supreme Court Graciela Dixon by formalizing the process, opening a file, and calling Cornejo to declare in the case. An interesting turn of events in this one - Gomez basically said that (according to law) the only one that can remove Cornejo from her position is the Criminal Room of the Supreme Court, who happen to be the same guys making the accusations of abuse of power. Now, will it be an abuse of THEIR power if they decide to remove Cornejo from her ANTI-CORRUPTION position? Watch and see. This is the legal equivalent of a fuse being lit on a powder-keg. This one gets a lot bigger before it gets smaller, and might go all the way to a full-fledged constitutional crisis. Watch for the Executive and Legislative Branches to step in to settle this. And my question remains - If Cornejo can't investigate the Supreme Court for corruption, who can? And, it makes sense to go for the top. Why investigate lower judges for corruption when they are just going to be protected by higher judges on appeal. Again, this one gets big.
