RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil: Florencia Quinones and Clarisa Huber scored a goal each Thursday to help Argentina beat Panama 2-0 in women's soccer to kick off the Pan American Games. The opening ceremony is Friday at Maracana stadium, but the women's soccer tournament began a day earlier to accommodate the competition's long schedule. Quinones scored in the 15th minute with a powerful shot from outside the area, hitting the right upper corner of the net. Huber added the other in the 62nd after the Panamanian defense failed to clear the ball after a free kick. Argentina played better at the start and was able to contain Panama's pressure in the second half at the Miecimo da Silva sports complex. Ecuador is to play Jamaica later Thursday. At the new Joao Havelange stadium, defending champion Brazil hosts Uruguay and the United States faces Paraguay. Argentina and Panama are in Group B along with Paraguay, the United States and Mexico.
