La Critica - Residents of Taboga Island are concerned that a billion-dollar oil project could damage tourist activity in the area. Today the Civic Association of Taboga will present its objections before the Municipal Council with regards to the project proposed by the company Industrial de Energías. They are afraid that the facilities to load supertankers with oil will affect the bird reserve on Urabá island, near Taboga. The residents of the island have already collected 600 signatures to reject the project.
Editor's Comment: A billion here, a billion there, after awhile it adds up to some real money. Where did this one come from? This plan calls for an entirely new pipeline to run from the Atlantic to the Pacific, with tanks and terminals on both ends, to allow supertankers to move oil without having to go through the canal. Another $1 billion dollars of projected direct foreign investment, infrastructure upgrades, jobs, and economic future. Yeah, birds and tourists. Got it. Anyone who wants to take the environmental angle, point to a major project that's been cancelled due to environmental concerns in Panama. Hasn't happened, and therefore this project will probably go through on the economics.
