RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP): An agreement was reached Friday allowing Panama to compete under its own flag at the Pan American Games following a dispute over control of the country's Olympic committee. Panamanian President Martin Torrijos reached an agreement with the Pan American Sports Organization officials early Friday in Rio. The athletes will be able to use the nation's flag beginning Friday in the opening ceremonies at Maracana stadium. The Panamanian Olympic Committee had been suspended by the International Olympic Committee following a lengthy legal dispute over control of the national body. Panama's athletes would have to compete internationally under the flag of PASO rather than their own flag until the issue was resolved. "We solved the immediate problem," Torrijos said. "It's an agreement of mutual respect to the rules of Panama and (PASO)." PASO president Mario Vazquez Rana said, however, that it would still take several months to resolve the issue involving the Panamanian national committee, and that he told Torrijos that "Panama needs to respect the rules of the international Olympic movement if it wants to be part of the IOC and PASO." An internal dispute prompted the creation of two Olympic federations in Panama, with PASO and IOC recognizing one of them and the local government the other.
