By Alexis Charris Palacios for La Estrella - Panama's Security Council has decided to take control of Panama's Office of Immigration due to the events of the past two years. The vulnerability of the entrances to the country has the Security Council worried, and that's why Security Council member Clovis Sinisterra is now the acting director of of the Office of Immigration. Marcel SalamÃn, who is also a member of the Security Council, explained that in the past two years the "uncontrolled flow of immigrants" has raised the concerns of the Security Council and that is why they are interested in what is happening within the leadership of the Office of Immigration. "It's not about any individual in particular," said SalamÃn, who said it's more about a process to approach the employees of the Office of Immigration to help them better understand their work. The intention is to make the Office of Immigration "more practical" added SalamÃn when commenting the recent decision to name Sinisterra - a retired police commissioner - as the temporary director of Immigration until a new permanent director is named to replace lawyer Ricardo Vargas who left the post to assume the position of the Defender of the People (or Ombudsman), a human rights watchdog position.
