The Empowerment Project, an activist group established in Chapel Hill, has re-released its most successful documentary, "The Panama Deception," comparing it to the current conflict in Iraq.
The documentary was presented as part of the "Balance and Accuracy in Journalism" series, held at the Community Church of Chapel Hill.
Originally released in 1992, "The Panama Deception" won an Academy Award for best feature documentary.
"It's pretty well-known," said David Kasper, executive director of the Empowerment Project and writer of the documentary.
"It got a lot of attention at the time and was a real expose of what was going on."
The documentary deals with the United States 1989 Panama invasion to overthrow dictator Manuel Noriega, as well as the role media played in publicizing the invasion.
Kasper said he thinks that there are many parallels between the invasion in Panama and the Iraq conflict.
"When you look at what it is about, how the U.S. entered Panama and what is going on today, and particularly with Iraq, how the U.S. created this elaborate campaign to convince the American public and the Congress, almost exactly the same methods were used in Panama."
The original documentary was not altered, but the new DVD version includes recent interviews with the creators and other experts on the topic, 15 years after the original release.
